gas up
- to add gas in your car.
I will have to gas up tomorrow because my gas tank is almost on empty.

gee whiz
- used as an exclamation to show surprise or other strong feelings
Gee whiz! Are we really going to go to go to Disneyland for our holiday?

get a break
- get an opportunity or good deal
I got a break when he sold the car for less than it was worth.

get across
- explain, make something understood
I had a hard time trying to get across to him the importance of taking care of his computer discs.

face down
- confront boldly and win, defy
They decided to face down their competitors and were able to easily stay in business.

face the music
- accept the consequences of something
He is going to have to face the music sooner or later.

face up to
- accept something that is not easy to accept
You must face up to the fact that you are never going to have enough money to buy that car.

face value
- value or price printed on a stamp/bond/paper money etc.
He gave me the face value that was printed on the used stamps.

- to talk or act differently because a situation has changed
Sally is dancing to a different tune because her boy friend now wants to break up with her.

dark horse
- someone or some group not favored to win
The New York Jets were the dark horse of the play offs but won the Super bowl.

dash off
- do or finish quickly, leave quickly
I’m late for work, so I’d better dash off.

dawn on
- become clear
It finally dawned on me as to why he was angry.

- any action that could fail but has a good chance of succeeding
They company took a calculated risk when they expanded their operations in Asia.

call a spade a spade
- to speak directly
Fred always tells you what he thinks, he calls a spade a spade.

call it quits
- to stop doing something
It’s already 7:30, lets call it quits for the day and go home.

call of nature
- the need to go to the bathroom
Can we find a bathroom, I feel the call of nature.

call off
- to cancel something
